Winnipeg Transit Diamond Lanes

New Diamond Lanes in Effect

Beginning Monday, November 9, 2009, Winnipeg Transit will open several new diamond lanes. The new lanes are on Portage Ave, Main St, Goulet St, and McPhillips St. See below for exact locations and hours that the diamond lanes will be in effect:

Portage Avenue:

  • Westbound between Colony and Strathcona from 7am –9am and 3:30pm – 5:30pm on weekdays
  • Eastbound between Raglan and St. Mary Avenue from 7am –9am and 3:30pm – 5:30pm on weekdays

Main Street:

  • Southbound between Smithfield and Jarvis from 7am – 9am on weekdays
  • Northbound between Jarvis and Inkster from 3:30pm – 5:30pm on weekdays

Goulet Street:

  • Westbound between Youville and Tache from 7am – 9am on weekdays

McPhillips Street:

  • Southbound between Hillock and William from 7am – 9am and 3:30pm – 5:30pm on weekdays

What are Diamond Lanes?

Diamond Lanes are reserved lanes for buses and bicycles. They were created as a means of increasing both the speed and reliability of transit service while providing a safe lane for cyclists to ride.

Signs (like the one shown below) are posted along Diamond Lanes indicate that the curb lane is reserved for buses and cyclists during the hours shown on the sign. In addition to roadside and overhead signs, double divided white paint lines and white diamond patterns will designate the diamond lanes.

      

Making the Right Turns

Traffic turning right can enter the diamond lane at any point in the block immediately preceding the intersection at which the turn is intended to be made. (see diagram below)

  • Diamond Lanes were first introduced in Winnipeg in 1995,
  • There are approximately 30 kilometres of reserved lanes covering 114 intersections,
  • Diamond lanes are a commonly used transit priority measure used world wide,
