To restore old transit vehicles for historical purposes; to create a transit museum for the display of transit vehicles; to provide restored transit vehicles to transport senior citizens, disabled persons, school children and other such groups for tours and outings; to provide restored transit vehicles for public parades and displays.
The Manitoba Transit Heritage Association (MTHA) is a non-profit organization whose members volunteer in the restoration, maintenance, display, and operation of Manitoba's largest collection of vintage buses.
Officially incorporated in 1990, the Manitoba Transit Heritage Association Inc. began recruiting members from across the Province of Manitoba. The response to the call for assistance was incredible, and led to the locating of many old motor-buses, trolley coaches and streetcars.
MTHA members have successfully restored four buses back to operational condition through hard work, donations and grants.
Current and new members continue to work on restoring a number of vintage vehicles, volunteer at public displays, participate in parades and collect a number of historical bus-related items. This memorabilia include transfers, tickets, maps, and books. The Association also maintains a collection of photographs of vintage transit vehicles and other buses.
Bus 214 - A work in progress. The MTHA is currently working on a 1941 Twin Coach model 30G. Although the body work and paint detail is complete the bus still needs a drive train, brakes, seats, and a front bumper.
On October 20th 1882 public transit was successfully tested in Winnipeg with regular service starting the next day. The first service in Winnipeg consisted of four horse drawn street cars on tracks. 125 years later with a fleet of 533 buses Winnipeg Transit continues to provide the citizens of Winnipeg with efficient, reliable, and affordable public transit.
