Winter Snow Plan

In the event of a severe winter storm or an emergency situation a decision may be made to implement the Winnipeg Transit Emergency "Snow Plan". The safety of our customers and employees is paramount whenever the implementation of this plan is considered.

Snow Plan Objective

  • Reduce the number of Winnipeg Transit and Handi Transit vehicles becoming stuck or stranded during a severe winter storm,
  • Reduce the risk of Winnipeg Transit customers/employees becoming injured during a severe winter storm,
  • Allow Winnipeg Transit to maintain more reliable service on a core network of major roads throughout the city.

How does the Snow Plan work?

  • Winnipeg Transit may implement the Snow Plan when it is unable to provide regular service in areas of the city due to severe weather conditions,
  • The Snow Plan involves a step down process where regular service may be limited or cancelled in some areas of the city to avoid buses becoming stuck,
  • Local news outlets will be informed when the Snow Plan is implemented.

Blue Service Condition
(The first step down from regular service)

  • A BLUE Service Condition may be declared when Winnipeg Transit is unable to provide service in areas of the city that have become difficult to access,
  • Winnipeg Transit will operate regular bus routes on all BLUE coloured roadways as shown in the Snow Plan Map,
  • Customers will be required to walk to/from bus stops located on BLUE routes,
  • Some service delays can be expected.

Red Service Condition
(Service on Major arterial streets only)

  • A RED Service Condition may be declared if weather conditions deteriorate to the point where buses can only operate on main arteries,
  • RED service will only be put in place at the beginning of a service day and will continue until the end of service that day even if street conditions improve,
  • Winnipeg Transit will attempt to operate modified bus routes on the RED coloured roadways as shown in the Snow Plan Map,
  • Customers will be required to walk to/from bus stops located on RED routes,
  • Winnipeg Transit will attempt to provide service every 15 minutes at bus stops located on RED coloured routes. Dress appropriately as delays can be expected,
  • If weather conditions deteriorate further all transit service may be suspended.

When will Transit Service return to normal?
Depending on the severity of the winter snow storm and ability of snow clearing to clear roadways, it may take several hours to several days before buses return to normal service levels. Listen to local news outlets or visit WinnipegTransit.com for further Snow Plan information.
