Winnipeg Transit

Operator Responsibilities

Winnipeg Transit Plus Operators are expected and required to provide safe, courteous and reliable transportation to the users in our community.

Winnipeg Transit Plus operators are required to:

  • Assist registrants with seat belts
  • Be alert and well rested at all times while operating the vehicle
  • Collect fares from clients in the form of:
    • cash payment,
    • Winnipeg Transit Plus Ticket, or
    • Monthly Winnipeg Transit Plus Pass
  • Have the Winnipeg Transit Plus decals clearly visible on their vehicle
  • Maintain their vehicle in a clean manner
  • Maintain their schedule when time, traffic and weather conditions permit
  • Operate the vehicle safely
  • Possess a valid Manitoba driver licence for the class of vehicle to be operated
  • Secure the registrant’s mobility device in accordance with Winnipeg Transit Plus policy
  • Treat and communicate with clients in a respectful manner
  • Wear an identification tag and High Visibility Vest at all times while providing service.
  • Provide a light assist to registrants at all times
    • For your safety and the safety of our drivers, effective January 01, 2019 Handi-Transit drivers will no longer maneuver a manual wheelchair up or down steps at a registrant’s pick-up or drop off locations.
    • Operators will provide a light assist to registrant when required. A light assist includes offering their arm, opening doors, and assisting with equipment. The operator may ask how he/she could be of assistance.
    • If the registrant indicates that no assistance is required, it is still important and mandatory that the driver walk beside the client to ensure their safety.

While operators provide general assistance, Winnipeg Transit Plus is NOT an assisted medical service.

  • Operators are not expected to perform the duties of a specialized attendant, or provide any type of medical assistance.
  • Operators do not provide personal attendant service or supervision during the trip, or place clients into the hands of someone else at the destination point (wait for a caregiver to arrive).
  • Registrants who require assistance during or after a trip should arrange for an attendant to travel with them. Winnipeg Transit Plus will reserve a seat for an attendant.
  • Winnipeg Transit Plus operators will secure a client’s wheelchair or other mobile-assistive device using the floor restraints.
  • At no time are operators allowed to lift or carry a registrant’s or a registrant’s parcels, bags or other personal items.

In the event of an emergency, the driver immediately notifies the Winnipeg Transit Plus dispatcher who will engage the City’s emergency services.
